BENEFITING: World Arts Focus

Joe’s Theater Tech Program (TTP) is a workforce development initiative that provides at-risk youth, ages 16-21, with instruction in theater tech, operation and digital media. Paired with critical supports, including tutoring, college exploration, life skills coaching, and real work experiences, participants gain life and employability skills toward a successful future.

TTP embraces youth most as risk of dropping out by providing one-on-one supports, mentoring and a belief in their abilities.

The program was created in 2008 in response to the high unemployment rate in Prince George’s County, MD where 74% of youth ages 16-19 and 36% of young adults ages 20-24 are jobless.

Students come to use from very low income households. They may be behind in school, have excessive absences, live with a single parent, or may be homeless, in foster care, or face other barriers to success. While in TTP, they receive 180 hours of technical training, academic support, post-secondary exploration, and work-readiness skills. Through our performing arts facility they have opportunities to work with industry professionals such as Women in Film and Video, Round House Theater and the University of Maryland. Stipends are awarded for active participation and completion of programmatic benchmarks. Participants also receive bonus incentives for special achievements in school and work.

$6,000 covers the cost of training and tutoring sessions as well as a stipend and bonus incentives for one Theater Tech Program participant for a year.
