On July 28, 1998 in Farmville, Virginia, Madeline Gearheart Mitchell made the decision to leave her abusive husband, Barry, with their two daughters. Despite leaving, Madeline was still harassed by Barry for months. Madeline took measures to protect herself and her daughters, but Barry continued to harass her. Shelter was not an option at the time because there was no shelter in Farmville and other shelters were full. On September 6, 1998, Barry broke into Madeline’s new apartment. He ordered their daughters outside and proceeded to shoot Madeline and then kill himself. Community members rallied together and open Madeline’s House (also known as Southside Center for Violence Prevention, Inc.).

Unfortunately, domestic violence is still prevalent today and we see stories like Madeline’s. By being limited with grant funds, we are not able to fully assist our clients and their children and pets, as we would like. Your donation would go towards our services to assist survivors such our children’s program. We are beyond thankful for the support we get from the community.
