Soldier On, Inc. is a nonprofit organization for homeless veterans that, in 2010, developed the Gordon H. Mansfield Veterans Community in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, a first-of-its-kind permanent supportive housing cooperative designed to help homeless veterans live self-sufficiently and independently. The veterans who reside at Soldier On are responsible for managing the buildings. In doing so, they develop valuable skill sets and acquire the training to lead new communities. These peer council members also act as mentors, providing guidance, inspiration and counsel. They help to foster a culture of trust, relationships, accountability and the expectation of responsibility required of every homeowner. In this community, Soldier On coordinates on-site medical care or transportation to local facilities, ensuring veterans receive both physical and mental health services. This well-rounded, facilitated care results in improved wellness and greater stability, thus reducing the risk of relapse and veterans falling back into homelessness.
