Soccerhood is a new initiative created to increase participation of the greater immigrant community within South Orange and Maplewood into the South Mountain Soccer program. The result of the kids' participation is not only that they can enjoy the sports program that the rest of our children do, but that they become more integrated into our community, building stronger friendships with the very kids with whom they go to school every day. It has improved their English, and even taught them greater responsibility. Until now, teachers at our schools have been paying out of pocket for registration and equipment for kids, and have been driving them to and from practices and games!
We will support 6 kids with the cost and logistical requirements associated with playing this fall season.
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
- Sponsor a player: Donation of $175 to cover the cost of registration for a single player.
- Single Donation: Financial donation of any amount which will go towards a pool of donations to cover the expenses of registration and equipment for players. Every little bit counts, so small donations welcome.
We are working with school administrators within the SOMSD ESL programs(Jennifer Latimer, Kate Fearon, and Katie Simpson) who have identified kids with desire to play in the Fall 2014 program. The Baird is supporting these efforts and holding spots for the participants. Kicks and Sticks has offered to provide new cleats and shin guards at a significant discount. This project was started with the help of a "Togetherhood" grant received by the South Mountain YMCA which aims to support member based volunteerism within our community. This grant is support based, not financial.
We have already seen the benefits of this program working from the sheer generosity of the administrators that brought the kids to the program and the coaches and parents who've helped with transportation over past seasons. It is time to step it up and take responsibility as a community to provide the opportunity to those that might otherwise not have it. The rewards will be not just for the participants, but also for the teammates, the donors, and the sponsors alike.
NOTE regarding tax deduction: if you would like your donation to be tax deductible, instead of donating on this website you can make a check payable to "SOUTH ORANGE VILLAGE", and make a notation of "Soccerhood" in the note section of the check. Please deliver to Elizabeth Sarkisian, 500 Ridgewood Rd, Maplewood NJ 07040 so that we can make sure the donation is allocated to the Soccerhood program.
IF WE EXCEED OUR GOALS(WHICH I HOPE WE WILL!):
Donations in excess of the amount needed for this season will be held until the Spring Season, when we will again be registering kids through Soccerhood. At that time if we find we are easily raising the funds for Soccerhood season to season, we will either expand the program to other Baird Youth Programs, or donate the money to the Baird's scholarship fund for them to use towards applicants for their other programs at their discretion.
