For Our Victim Advocate and Survivor, Melita

Melita a survivor of domestic violence and victim's advocate know all to well about the devasting impact of domestic violence and financial abuse.

One of Melita's first encounters with her abusers was he beat her, put a knife to her throat and threatened to burn her house down with her inside, if she didn't drive him to an ATM to withdraw $600.

Then on June 1, 2016, Melita came home from work and her ex-boyfriend was waiting for her inside her home. Melita tried to run, but her ex pulled her back inside, threw gasoline on her and set her on fire. After setting her on fire, he sprayed her with a plastic sink sprayer to put the fire out, then drove her to Grady Memorial Hospital and dropped her off.

Melita survived the attack but was in a coma for two weeks. She was burned over 25 percent of her body.

Melita who worked in the medical field before the incident has been a long time advocate for domestic violence victims through Sisters Empowerment Network and the Sistah Circle organizations but remained silent about her own personal abuse.

The amazing thing about Malita is before she fully recovered, she was back raising her beautiful daughter, and worked a part time job. Melita enrolled in Albany State University to pursue her RN degree and graduated on December 9th 2017. In addition, Melita immediately got back on the front-line advocating for victims of domestic violence by traveling with the SEN organization on speaking engagements and workshops. She is doing very well for herself and will always commit to helping other.

As for Melita's abuser, he was later found hiding in her home while she was in the hospital recovering and was arrested. He was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility for parole.

We do this by helping prepare them to achieve their full potential through support services, referrals, training, leadership and career development. As advocates for social change, we advance our mission by empowering women to realize their full potential which ultimately can assist with breaking the cycle of poverty, create prosperity, and create other transformative outcomes. By supporting women, we can turn abysmal indicators around and begin to solve many of the world's most critical problems that affect women and their children.

Our Core Values: We believe that empowerment is the cornerstone of women and girl’s progress. Since its inception, Sisters Empowerment Network has been governed by its core values. They define the character of our organization. They guide how to behave and make decisions.

Our Strategy: To provide services to women and their children whose lives have been physically and emotionally affected by domestic violence? We aim to become a clearinghouse of information, services, resources and referrals to nurture the full inclusion, at all levels, of the widest variety of support services, along with local services, shelters, financial, counseling, legal advocacy available at our disposal.
