Oh, how our work at the Sioux City Railroad Museum has changed in only a few weeks with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The museum is shuttered, normal volunteer work has dried up, and revenues have all but evaporated. All our programs, tours, and events have been cancelled or rescheduled for later dates.

Everyday, we have phone messages from visitors wanting to know how they can access the museum. For many children with autism, watching the model trains, climbing aboard the railroad equipment, and riding the grand scale train is a way for them to have a relaxing, good time. For other visitors, the railroad museum is a place where they can travel back in time and connect to our community's history.

Although, the Sioux City Railroad Museum is closed, we have not let the pandemic derail us from our work in preserving the buildings and structures of the Milwaukee Railroad Shops Historic District.

Contractors are using this time to continue their preservation work on the six-stall Roundhouse Building. They have built new exterior doors and windows, installed electrical and lighting systems, and restored several exterior walls.

Becasue of their work, we will be able to start transforming the Roundhouse into our new, large-scale exhibit center to house equipment displays.

In addition, our leadership staff has been working remotely planning new exhibits, educational programs, and pop-up events that will bring life back to our historic site when we are able to reopen. Not only that, this team has worked on projects that were often put off until a rainy day.
