BENEFITING: RIDE FOR LIFE INC
EVENT DATE: Apr 28, 2013
Kevin, Caitlin and I will be participating in the 2013 25 mile ALS 'Ride for Life' bike race on Sunday April 28th!
My great aunt, 'Maureen' Murphy, had ALS for 13 months before passing away in 2005. In her life Aunt Maureen was a school teacher and librarian, a mother of 5, grandmother of 11, as well as a huge supporter of this organization once she was diagnosed. She was always an inspirational person for many as she never ceased to care for others, even when people had to care for her. We are riding in honor of her and all of the other amazing people who have suffered and passed away from this heartbreaking disease.
Ride For life, Inc. is a not-for-profit corporation founded in 1998 by ALS patients, caregivers and those who care about people living with ALS. ALS is a progressive neuro-degenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Many people with ALS are required to use wheelchairs and other physical supports as their disease progresses.
"Ride For Life" was named because of our annual event in which ALS patients ride their power wheelchairs, along with supporters down the highways and byways to raise funds for a cure and create awareness for their disease. For the past 14 years, ALS patients have ridden their wheelchairs first from Yankee Stadium to Washington D.C., then from Montauk Point (the tip of Long Island) to Manhattan and finally, all around the Metro area.
The mission of Ride For Life, Inc. is to raise research funds to find a cure for ALS - 'Lou Gehrig's Disease', to support patients and their families through patient services, to raise awareness and to provide the community with the latest ALS news, information and inspiration.
Our goal for the ride is to raise $1,000. We know that everyone is tight with money these days, but every dollar counts! Thanks for your support!
