BENEFITING: Joslin Diabetes Center
EVENT DATE: Oct 08, 2017
I will be running this marathon to honor my mother, June Connolly, who has been managing type 1 diabetes for 62 years. For my entire life I’ve watched her maintain tight control of her blood sugar with multiple insulin injections every day and a careful diet. Most of the time, my mom is able to recognize when her blood sugar is too low or too high and takes the necessary steps to bring it back in line. It’s a difficult balance to achieve and requires constant vigilance. She’s handled the highs and lows with grace and without much complaint. People today are living longer with type 1 diabetes thanks to the research conducted by the Joslin Diabetes Center, however it is rare for people to manage the disease for as long as my mom has. In fact, she’s one of 4,000 people who have received the Joslin Diabetes Center’s 50-year medal. This medal is for people who have been battling diabetes for 50 years.
