BENEFITING: Alzheimer's Association
ORGANIZER: Seth and Lauren
EVENT DATE: Apr 15, 2014
As I'm sure many of you have seen, Seth Rogen has been voraciously raising awareness about Alzheimer's, and even recently went in front of congress to detail the direness of the disease. The stats are astounding: more than 5 million Americans currently suffering; the 6th leading cause of death in the US; $220 billion of unpaid care provided last year by friends, family and loved ones. The numbers are scary, but they're not the whole story.
If those figures don't impact you, I promise you the people will. People like my mother, who drives to Cape Cod four days a week to spoon feed her father puréed food. People like my grandmother, who was once locked outside by my grandfather when he insisted she had to leave because he didn't know her. People like my neighbor, who had to build a cardboard contraption to keep her father from escaping in the middle of the night. People like Karen, a woman whom I once interviewed, who had to explain to her 8-year old son why his father was starting to forget things in his fifties.
Maybe you know people like this, maybe you don't. Maybe you have a story, maybe you're lucky enough not to yet. But Alzheimer's is on the rise, and statistically speaking, it's almost unavoidable that you'll soon experience the tragedy of this disease in some way. We need to make sure that the future hold more hope than my family was allowed. We need to make sure we give Alzheimer's the awareness it not only deserves, but needs.
My Grampa will never again know who I am, but I know who he is, and I'll never forget to keep fighting in his behalf. I hope you'll join me.
Thank you :)
