Big Class's Seed Challenge
DEADLINE TO GIVE: Dec 31, 2015
Plant a seed for Big Class' youth writing center by donating as an individual or fundraising as a team. Your donation will be doubled thanks to 826 National!
Donations over $100 will be featured as part of our Founders' Circle. Additionally, 826 National has awarded us a $100,000 Challenge Grant to pursue our goals. So, for every dollar we raise between now and December 31, 826 will match it.
Since 2010, over 2000 of New Orleans young writers have participated in Big Class's free programs, publishing over 50 books ranging from illustrated story collections, to bilingual comic anthologies, to letters to America. They have also published poetry on pizza boxes, built houses of stories, made movies, taken photographs, and created paintings inspired by jazz and Basquiat.
And that's just the beginning. Two weeks ago, Big Class launched the "seed" year of our Seed, Grow, Thrive three-year plan. The cornerstone of this plan is the opening of our youth writing center, modeled after the work of 826 National. Hence, The Seed Challenge!
What is The Seed Challenge?
The Seed Challenge is Big Class's grassroots effort to raise $10,000 for our youth writing center through small donations to creative, personal fundraisers run by some of the amazing volunteers, supporters, and educators who have gotten us here.
What is 826?
826 National is a a network of nonprofit youth writing, tutoring, and publishing organizations renowned for their ability to get young people excited about writing through both in-school programs and from their unique community spaces. Just like us! Modeled after the success of flagship chapter 826 Valencia, founded in 2002, the 826 National network is now seven cities strong–and growing!
What does Big Class have to do with 826 National?
Since our founding, Big Class has aspired to the 826 model and since late 2014 we have been participating in 826 National's Chapter Development Process. We receive strategic support from an inspiring, accomplished national literacy organization while we develop as as an independent 501c3 responding to New Orleans’ unique local needs.
And how does all that fit with The Seed Challenge?
As a part of our work to become the first 826 chapter in the south, 826 National has issued a $100,000 Challenge Grant to Big Class, meaning all the funds raised through The Seed Challenge will be doubled!
