Yay! I exceeded my fundraising goal, thanks to you!

I became aware of the maternal health crisis when I was pregnant with my daughter in 2011. My daughter's father is from Tanzania and I naivly thought that I would love for her to be born there. When he explained the situation to me in more detail I realized, Tanzania is not the place to be if something goes wrong. The lifetime risk of dying from pregnancy and childbirth related causes in Tanzania is 1 in 45. The US, while much better than Tanzania, has the worst maternal mortality rates in the developed world with maternal deaths on the rise.
It is estimated that 98% of these deaths are preventable. That percentage is true for all maternal deaths, not just Tanzania where they lack resources and training, but right here at home in the US too.
I am passionate about educating childbearing families of the role they play in their own experience. When we know better, we do better. We need to stand together to say that this is not acceptable, every mother and new parent deserves a positive entrance to parenthood with the birth of each new baby.
