BENEFITING: Rebuilding Together Seattle
Taking a shower, walking down your front steps, cooking a warm meal on the stove: these are all daily tasks that are easy to take for granted. But how often do we stop to reflect on all these small gifts that we take advantage of each day? What if they were suddenly taken away, and your life completely changed?
This is the story of our neighbor Kristi, who was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome two years ago. The disease attacked her nervous system, putting her on ventilation for 11 months and leaving her mostly paralyzed and in a wheelchair. In hopes of regaining some of her former independence, Kristi has returned home after more than a year of intense physical therapy. However, her house is not equipped to accommodate her new mobility limitations. She can’t access her washer and dryer or reach the knobs on her stove without burning herself. Her toilet is too low and her showerhead is too high. Her only exit is via a makeshift ramp off her sliding back door.
Kristi applied for help from Rebuilding Together Seattle, a local nonprofit that brings volunteers and community partners together to provide safe housing for our neighbors in need. Schulte Design Build, a small Seattle-area construction firm, wants to help Kristi by completing the home safety and accessibility improvements they need through partnership with Rebuilding Together Seattle. They hope to widen her doorways, replace her appliances, install a higher toilet and lower sink, reinforce the walkway up to her house, and more, all to help Kristi regain her independence in her home.
This can all be possible with your help: Schulte is aiming to raise $5,000 from our fellow community members in order to pay for the construction materials needed to complete these improvements.
Kristi shares, "Daily routines like bathing are an ordeal for me. I've cried enough to fill Lake Washington, but it's time for me to keep moving. This support from Rebuilding Together can help me do that."
