Save the Asian Elephant

The wild Elephants of Asia are being kidnapped, killed, and deprived of their habitat at such an alarming rate that experts believe they will be extinct in less than 15 years. Yet unlike their African cousins, Asian elephants have received little media attention, and their plight is largely unknown. These extraordinary animals have few champions, and without our immediate help their extinction looks certain.
However, over the past years one exceptional man fought to save the elephants of Asia, and he discovered a remarkably effective way to do it. Legendary adventurer, Mark Shand, identified the ancient pathways relied upon by generations of elephants and saw how these once remote areas have been threatened by human development. He established the Elephant Family charity, working to preserve and reinstate elephant corridors for future generations of elephants and wildlife. The charity works to relocate families who have settled in these areas to newly formed villages several miles away from elephant migratory paths and turn the elephant corridors into protected wildlife parks.
But Mark Shand’s sudden death in April 2014 tragically cut short his life’s work. In March 2015, ‘Travels to My Elephant’ was launched in Mark’s honour by Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall. Inspired by Mark’s travels and his great sense of fun, this epic auto rickshaw race will continue his life’s work by raising funds for Elephant Family. This November 2015, some of Mark’s family and friends will set out across central India, in the hopes to raise the $1 million needed to protect the Asaam corridor critical to the survival of 6,500 wild elephants. One of the largest strongholds of wild elephants in Asia.
As part of the adventure, each team in the race aims to raise a minimum of $20,000. Every penny raised goes directly to protecting habitats of the wild elephants, and thereby also preserving these forests for all the other animals who inhabit them including the endangered Tiger and Orangutan.
