BENEFITING: AVENUES FOR HOMELESS YOUTH
EVENT DATE: Jun 24, 2017
The statistics of homeless youth in Minnesota are staggering. There isn’t enough shelter, housing and supportive services in the state for the more than 6,000youth who experience homelessness every night. A 2015 study by Wilder Research found that youth age 24 or younger are the most likely age group to be homeless.
Homeless youth are disproportionately youth of color and victims of violence, sexual, physical or emotional abuse.
Homeless youth struggle with numerous issues because of their age and lack of safe housing:
* They are too young to obtain rental housing on their own; they simply do not have adequate income or savings to pay a damage deposit.
*Without job experience or personal identification with a current address, they struggle to gain or improve upon their employment.
*They have had little or no access to health care, mental health, legal support or social services.
*Very often, their education is interrupted or curtailed.
Avenues for Homeless Youth helps over 300 youth each year find safe shelter and support. They provide the opportunity to transition to a stable young adulthood and become contributing members of our community. Your donation will help make this a reality for more Minneapolis youth.
