On November 5th, 2017, I will be running my third NYC marathon, but this time around will be special in a different way. This year I will be running on behalf of the Sandy Hook Promise, a charity founded and led by the families who lost loved ones in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting on December 14, 2012.
Something I've always possessed in abundance is empathy. It's been a blessing and a curse most of my life to feel the pain of others. And while I am not a mom just quite yet, no mother or father should have to experience what these families had to go through. EVER. I think about my nieces and nephew and the kids of my friends, and my heart breaks imagining what it would be like to lose a child - it goes against nature - let alone under such horrific circumstances.
Therefore, I'd like to do the right thing and help protect children from gun violence and support solutions to prevent preventable tragedies in the future. Every contribution will make a difference. And my personal goal is to inspire you to want to give - especially with the knowledge that your efforts might just save someone's life.
As the marathoner saying goes: "Run the first 10 miles with your brain, the second 10 miles with your legs, and the last 6.2 with your heart", well this year, I'll be running with ALL heart - one mile for each victim of this unimaginable tragedy.
