As we enter our seventh season of Aztec youth rugby in San Diego, we’d like to begin by saying thank you to all the people who have worked so hard to make our club a success. Without the commitment of dedicated parents, coaches and certainly our players, we wouldn't be where we are today.

A quick look back
As the Young Aztecs rugby club began to take shape, we talked a lot about the core values that make up the foundation our club. By combining the joy of rugby with an emphasis on commitment, effort, respect, honesty, sportsmanship and a sense of community, we have been able to make a difference in the lives of many. Whether you played rugby professionally or have only recently been introduced to the sport, the sense of belonging to a worldwide community is real and will stay with you throughout life. In joining the growing legion of rugby fans around the world, you have given your child the chance to play one of the greatest games along with the opportunity to be part of one of the strongest fraternities in the world. Where ever you travel, locally or around the world, you will find you have friends and supporters you never knew. For many of our players, tomorrow is just the beginning.

We now have club programs that support players from 5 to19 years old along with a rapidly growing high school age league that stretches across San Diego County. Our numbers are growing as is the awareness around town that we have something special happening here. From the long overdue decision to return rugby to the 2016 Olympics to the half page article in a recent edition of the San Diego Tribune, we can see the effect of promoting rugby as a positive, healthy; youth sport both here in our community and across the country. Through rugby, we have the opportunity to show our children that everyone can be a positive, confident, successful member of their community.

As we head deeper into the season, we’d like to reiterate some of our goals for the club:

Respect our players, coaches, parents and opponents at all times
Embrace all players, regardless of athletic ability
Strive to win, but value sportsmanship and integrity more
Promote a safe and positive environment in which our athletes can safely participate.
Expect commitment and support from every member of the club
Congratulate great effort wherever you find it
Take responsibility for your actions and your community

Anticipate a community that goes beyond rugby
Live by our code of conduct and behavior
Leave the competition on the field; treat our opponents as family, before and after the match

Goal of the Young Aztecs RFC:

Introduce the sport of rugby to the youth of San Diego County with an emphasis on safety, camaraderie and sportsmanship where the teaching of fundamental skills, strategies and tactics of rugby are emphasized with a focus on inclusion and participation.

Please keep in mind that the U8 and U10 divisions are developmental divisions, and while the U12 is competitive (keep score and standings within the league) we are still a developing club with many players (and parents) that are new to the sport and the rugby community. There are many challenges that we will face this year:

If we all keep in mind that this is new to many, that the game could look like a quagmire at times (but can evolve into a thing of beauty), and look for the progress of development over the season, it will be a positive and rewarding experience for everyone.
