BENEFITING: THE SAMARITANS
ORGANIZER: THE SAMARITANS
EVENT DATE: Nov 10, 2013
Losing my dad, Henry Bandel, to suicide in 1999 has been the single most painful experience in my life and although time certainly helps heal and life goes on it is a loss that continues to live with me. I first connected with the Samaritans of RI's Safe Place support group for those left behind after a suicide shortly after my dad's death. It was instrumental in helping me grieve such a loss that at the time was very difficult for me to be open about because of the stigma of suicide and depression. I joined the Samaritans of RI's Board of Directors in 2011.
Many of you in RI may know of Samaritans because of their signs on the Pell and other bridges. But, they are much more than that. They run a Crisis Hotline/Listening Line, Youth and Teen education, and Community Education programs. In 2011, Samaritans established the Forget-Me-Not Gallery in Pawtucket, RI as a place to foster inpiration and hope.
We all know of someone be it personally or a family member we never knew, acquaintance, veteran, celebrity, or person in the news that has died by suicide. Suicide prevention isn't a glamorous fundraising issue. It's hard and difficult to talk about. But just imagine if there were no organizations like the Samaritans of RI around doing the work they do. Imagine if there were no volunteers answering a call from someone in crisis who needed someone to just listen.
The Samaritans of RI does such vital work all on an extremely limited budget. I hope you will help me in supporting them so that their programs can continue.
