THE STORY:

Ryder has been through so much in his 7-8 years. His prior home is unknown, but a lot of evidence supports it wasn't a good one. He was owner surrendered to the Leon County Animal Shelter, but fortunately he was only there a day or so before he found his forever home. He was heartworm positive & went through the treatment to rid them from his body. He was diagnosed several years ago with dry eyes; an auto immune disorder requiring daily drops for life. In June of 2017 he suffered a significant stroke impairing the right side of his body. This came on suddenly & without a known cause. Thanks to rapid care at Allied Veterinary Emergency Hospital, he survived. While at Allied, they performed a chest x-ray, which to shocking surprise, showed a small bullet under his arm. From Allied, he was under the care of the wonderful physicians at Capital Veterinary Specialist (CVS). They sent him for an MRI which confirmed the stroke. He spent 5 days in the ICU, unable to walk or go to the potty on his own. He never really lost his appetite though! Immediately, after being released from CVS, he started receiving laser acupuncture from his awesome vet, Melanie Donofro @ Los Robles Animal Hospital. This procedure helped stimulate nerves throughout his spine & legs to get him back walking. After multiple rounds of twice weekly treatment, he was able to walk. He also went for physical therapy, weekly @ Los Robles, to help him regain strength & balance. He was recently released from physical therapy at the end of September. Currently, he is about 95% recovered & can do all things he could do prior to the stroke. The purpose of sharing his life's story is to provide hope to other pet parents should they face similar circumstances. There are so many resources available to ensure that the animal not only survives but thrives! Ryder's strong will to live & get better, combined with his excellent medical care makes him my hero! I can't imagine life without his clownish personality. His doggie brother Cooper & kitty brother, Milo think he's pretty special too!

Ryder is truly a super hero pup! However his mom, Tara, is a hero too!!! Tara's love, commitment and dedication to Ryder is so inspiring. Tara gave Ryder not only a second chance for a better life but it appears a third chance. Ryder has experienced much suffering in his young life and I am thrilled he has a beautiful forever home. Thank you for showing true love and compassion for our furry companions. 3 years ago
