BENEFITING: Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
ORGANIZER: Cystic Fibrosis
EVENT: 2018 Pittsburgh Marathon
EVENT DATE: May 06, 2018
Being a part of the Run to Cure CF team over the past five years has made quite an impact on my life. I have had the opportunity to observe first hand the good that exists in this world. Witnessing countless acts of love, generosity, support and encouragement all working together to bring hope to the countless individuals affected by this terrible disease. Despite suffering from cystic fibrosis since birth, I was also exposed to the varying degrees of severity of this illness. Albeit I have had my share of hardships, this exposure led me to the realization that I am one of the lucky ones. A few hours of treatments each day and a handful of pills sure beats spending a majority of life in a hospital bed. Struggling to run long distances sounds quite a bit better than struggling to walk up a set of stairs.
As my involvement with the organization grew, so did the circle of people I know living with cystic fibrosis, hearing stories of heartbreak, triumph, highs, lows, struggles and victories. It's in my nature to focus on the triumphs and victories, so let’s begin with those. We are seeing first hand the life-saving ramifications of the generous donations from so many selfless individuals. Drugs are now available to some individuals that are treating the underlying cause of CF rather than the symptoms. People are living longer, healthier, happier lives. Your donations are the reason why. You are truly saving lives. But the fight isn’t over yet. There are still individuals, such as myself, waiting for the magic pill that will help correct their mutation. I am so grateful for the progress, but let’s shoot for perfection.
We will end cystic fibrosis. It will be a disease of the past. But how fast can we get there? How many lives can we save as we approach the finish line? We are in a time where you have the power to truly make a difference. Every dollar counts. Every cent gets us one step closer. We have won some battles, but let’s end the war.

Our Run to Cure CF team in Pittsburgh continues to grow each year, as do our research efforts, drug and therapy developments, and progress we’ve made in the search for a cure. Recently, our community has been celebrating many successes in drug development and therapy advances for those with CF, but the lives of young people are still being cut far too short. Will you join us in the fight and the search for a cure? Accept the challenge today and help add tomorrows to the lives of those living with cystic fibrosis! Please consider registering to run or making a donation to one of our dedicated team members! We will train hard and strive to cross that finish line and find a cure!
What Is Cystic Fibrosis? Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide). A defective gene and its protein cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs, leads to life-threatening lung infections, obstructs the pancreas, and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food.
In the 1950s, few children with cystic fibrosis lived to attend elementary school. Today, advances in research and medical treatments have further enhanced and extended life for children and adults with CF. Many people with the disease can now expect to live into their 30s, 40s, and beyond.
