The Story

This year I'm running a few races; I recently completed a 10k and plan on doing at least 3 more races. I figured if I am going to be running, why not do it for a good cause. When I was trying to think of a charity or cause to raise money for, one stuck out. When I found out a while ago that my uncle Randy had Parkinson's, I was floored. I wanted to do something to help as he's been a big part of my life, and one of the main reasons my golf game has improved over the years (swing with your eyes crossed!)

As many of you know, Parkinson's is a chronic and progressive movement disorder that causes malfunction and death of vital nerve cells in the brain, called neurons. Neurons release dopamine, a chemical that sends messages to the part of the brain which controls movement and coordination. As the neurons cease to function, less dopamine is created, leaving a person unable to control movement normally. Currently, there are roughly one million people living with Parkinson's in the US, with another 60,000 diagnosed each year.

The cause of Parkinson's is unknown at this time, and with that, there is currently no cure. The best thing we as family and supporters can do is raise funds to continue research on this devastating disease.

The charity I'm looking to fund-raise for is the Parkinson's Action Network. They are the unified voice of the Parkinson's community, advocating for better treatments and a cure. A lot of their work is creating awareness and educating public and government leaders on better policies for research and improving the quality of life for people with Parkinson's. Charity Navigator gives them a 3 of 4 star rating (89.93, 90 is considered 4 star) and their accountability and transparency is rated at 100. In addition, they have been very accessible to me during this process answering any questions that I may have.

So, what I'm asking of you is this: Donate a dollar, or more, for every mile that I run.  I am currently planning on running 32 miles, so if you donate $1 per mile, that's $32, $2/mile is $64, etc.  There aren't really any good websites that would record and take your money as I run more, so I set it up on a website called CrowdRise.  From there, you can donate whatever amount you'd like..  Every dollar counts, so whether it's $1 or $1000, I appreciate your donations.  I did my research on sites, and this one appears to be one of the better for fees and everything like that, and fits my personality well.  The website takes major credit cards, but if you would like to pay with a check instead, feel free to contact me and I can add those funds manually to the site.

I'm also looking for people to join me in fundraising.  Whether it be biking, running, or walking events, feel free to contact me and I can send you an invite to join my team through the CrowdRise site.  If you're not interested, cool.  I would appreciate it if you could let others know though so we can give this the effort it deserves!

I am also considering getting some t-shirts created with the logo I have attached.. but I'm not sure if there would be interest.  They would likely be dri-fit style tees with the logo on the front, and all profits from the shirts would go directly to this fundraiser as well.  These shirts would likely cost $18 a piece, and would be pretty awesome.  Everyone you know would be jealous of them.

Even if you are unable to donate, please pass this along to as many people as possible, so we can help raise some serious money for a serious cause.  Thanks again.
