Kimberly Yezak-McDonald

If you've ever met me, I've probably shared with you that I've battled with anxiety that found its way into my life around the age of 25. And it still sometimes creeps into my day. When I first started struggling with it, I found a wonderful support system that I continue to visit- Houston Galveston Institute (HGI).

HGI is a non-profit organization that serves the greater Houston area. It provides counseling services, workshops, programs & services to those from all walks of life & all economic levels. They also have therapists active in low-income communities, working with children & families who have faced horrendous situations in their lives, from abuse, neglect & violence in & around their home. Without HGI’s programs & services, many of these families would not have access to counseling, someone to help them work through their challenges & find a way out of intergenerational habits & poverty.

Through this organization’s work, many of these families from low-income communities are able to move forward into training opportunities & then the workforce, setting a new example for their children – our next generation.

HGI is near and dear to my heart. The counselors helped me through such an instable part of my life. I was able to learn more about myself and how I can take care of me and others in my life. I'm stronger than ever these days and I'm here to be a face of mental illness to #stopthestigma.

I'm running a marathon in September and I would love to know that every step I take (especially in those last few grueling miles) are not only for myself, but for those who haven't sought out help just yet.  And maybe, the counselors of HGI will be there for them as they were for me.

No amount is too small. Give what you can and/or share this page.  1 in 4 adults struggle with mental illness, if anything let's start tearing down the stigma.

Extremely Grateful,
