EVENT DATE: Oct 09, 2016

THE STORY:

This October I’m running the Chicago Marathon to raise funds that will help bring safety and self-defense skills for people with disabilities to Chicago. Your donations will support IMPACT Chicago, an organization that has been empowering women and girls to keep themselves and their communities safe since 1987.

Funds I raise will be used to train the IMPACT Chicago team to teach IMPACT:Ability, a nationally recognized, research-based self-defense program for people with disabilities that was developed by IMPACT Chicago’s sister organization in Boston.

This is my third marathon. What I love most about running these distances is the way it forces me to focus on my strength and allows me to challenge myself to do what I never thought I could. Running the Boston Marathon had been a dream of mine since I was a kid, and the joy I experienced at completing this goal last year, inspired me to keep going, because by running, I have the opportunity to raise needed funds and awareness for more causes that I care about.

IMPACT Chicago has seen the success of the IMPACT Boston IMPACT:Ability Program and is excited about providing this safety training to people in Chicago. Since 2011, IMPACT Boston has empowered over 1000 people with significant physical and cognitive disabilities to protect and advocate for themselves.

Consider these success stories:

· A high school student used what she learned from IMPACT:Ability to stop and abusive ex-boyfriend from harassing her online · A student with autism put his hands up and yelled “no” when someone tried to rob him.

· A high school student working at her first job stopped a coworker from sexually harassing her and effectively reported the situation to a supervisor.

· A teen boy broke up a fight between two classmates. Nobody was hurt.

With your help we can bring this empowering program to teens and adults with disabilities in Chicago. Safety skills for people with disabilities could not be more necessary. Nationally people with disabilities are twice as likely to experience violent crime as those without disabilities. Children with disabilities are three times as likely to experience sexual abuse as those without disabilities.

This is important to me because I have witnessed the power of IMPACT:Ability, I have seen how it gives people the skills to advocate for themselves in their daily lives, and the confidence to live more fully. By running the Chicago Marathon, and with your support, we have the potential to bring this life saving, life affirming program to Chicago. Let's do this!! And THANK YOU!!!!
