After managing City Year Philadelphia's charity partnership with the Philadelphia Marathon races for the past three years, I am finally taking the dive into participating myself.
Why City Year? In the summer of 2014, I was invited to join City Year Philadelphia's newly formed Associate Board - a group of passionate young professionals who were committed to supporting City Year's work in Philadelphia to provide better educational opportunities for students in the public school system. That year, I had the opportunity to participate in a service day at a local elementary school and take a tour of the school. One of the stops on the tour was to an empty library in the school, where I learned that the school didn't have the resources to purchase books for students to use/borrow let alone hire a librarian to manage a library. I was blown away by the empty bookshelves when I learned that City Year AmeriCorps members spent their own time collecting a few shelves full of books so that they could occasionally have students visit the library, even for just an hour a week. Their interest in providing a better learning environment for the students that they served was unbelievable for me.
Why Run for CIty Year? A few months later, I had the opportunity to join City Year's staff as a part of their Individual Giving. Each day, I am driven by the dedication and compassion that our City Year AmeriCorps members bring to their students each day as well as the knowledge that the students we serve deserve better. This year, City Year Philadelphia is serving in 18 underresourced schools across Philadeplhia, like the one that I described above, impacting nearly 12,000 children. This year, I have chosen to participate in Run for City Year to raise awareness for CIty Year's work, as well as to help build resources to make sure that City Year is able to reach more at-risk students into the future!
