EVENT DATE: Oct 13, 2013
As a member of the board of directors of CAWC (Connections for Abused Women and their Children) and an avid runner, running the 2013 Chicago Marathon as part of the Run Domestic Violence Out of Town team is a natural fit for me. Running is a very personal, even selfish endeavor, and one that i spend a lot of my free time doing! My work with CAWC is just the opposite: it is my way of looking outside of my own comfortable world and helping people who have not been as lucky as i have. To be honest, I’m not super-excited about running another marathon. I ran the 2002 Chicago Marathon, and it was amazing. And life-disruptive, painful, crazy time-consuming, etc. Since then I’ve battled some minor injuries and have stuck mostly to the half-marathon distance and shorter. But really, how could i pass up this chance to run for a good cause? And it really is a good cause. I have had hands-on experience with the work of one part of the Chicago Metropolitan Battered Women’s Network through my work with CAWC, and i can attest that the work being done makes a huge impact in the lives of the people who seek services. Without CAWC and the other organizations in the Network, there would be a HUGE hole in the social safety net in Chicago. And that’s where you come in! Any amount you give will be greatly appreciated and put to good use helping women and their families become whole again after being victims of domestic violence.
