EVENT DATE: Oct 13, 2013
I will be running my first marathon this fall to raise money to end domestic violence and help keep its survivors safe in the Chicago area. I thought that nothing could convince me to voluntarily run 26.2 miles, but shortly after completing my first half marathon in June, I learned that the Chicago Metropolitan Battered Women’s Network was starting a team and decided that this was an issue important enough to put myself through the inevitable pain of training.
After finishing law school I served as a fellow at the Domestic Violence Legal Clinic, where I am now Vice Chair of the Young Professionals Board and take on clients on a pro bono basis through my firm, Jenner & Block. At the DVLC and in my pro bono cases I work to help people obtain orders of protection against their abusers and keep themselves safe as they leave an abusive relationship. Working with the DVLC attorneys and our clients has shown me how important it is to have quality assistance available when going through such a difficult experience. That assistance can mean the difference between getting out and going back. I am running the Chicago Marathon to ensure that people are aware of, and receive, the services and support they deserve to follow through on what is often a difficult decision to leave a damaging situation.
