The First Amendment is a cornerstone of American democracy. When the press comes under attack, our democracy falters. Right now, American democracy is faltering.

Reporters Without Borders, known by its French acronym RSF, is one of the largest international press freedom and freedom of information NGOs in the world. Through our US Chapter, we advocate for press freedom in the United States and globally, and provide legal assistance and training to journalists so they can protect themselves in the field and online.

RSF USA keeps track of every assault to US press freedom. Day in and day out, we carry out critical research, publish reports, influence policy, and organize events to ensure respect for the First Amendment and access to reliable information. 2020 is poised to be a momentous year for the United States and we plan to mobilize tirelessly around three main initiatives: restoring respect for the First Amendment, defending the safety of journalists, and holding tech giants accountable to citizens.

For the first time ever, in 2019, RSF’s World Press Freedom Index categorized the United States as a “problematic” place for journalists to operate. Today, it ranks 48th out of 180 countries, residing between Senegal and Romania.

President Donald Trump has routinely targeted the media as the “enemy of the people” and journalists are facing the consequences. White House reporters have had their press passes arbitrarily revoked, Customs and Border Patrol agents have harassed reporters while trying to reenter the country, and major news outlets have faced bomb threats. One of the worst attacks on the press in the United States was the deadly shooting at the Capital Gazette in 2018, which left five journalists dead.

The rise of tech giants such as Facebook and Google have led to a rapidly changing information space and news deserts across the country that threaten to leave Americans uninformed about their communities and the world around them. Through our advocacy, RSF USA is determined to protect Americans’ access to news and information that is reliable and trustworthy, and that empowers them to make informed decisions about their lives.
