BENEFITING: Self Help Africa
On November 21st I will travel with my family to Ethiopia to participate in the Great Ethiopian Run - a 10km race which is the largest road race in Africa! I am traveling with Self Help Africa, an organization I have been very involved with for nearly 4 years. I have spent time in Ethiopia with Self Help Africa on two occasions. I fell in love with the country, and was so impressed with their work in rural communities that I wanted to come back with Carletta and the kids to show them too.
I am fundraising for Self Help Africa. The project that we are funding is an income generating activity for disadvantaged women in rural Ethiopia - Self Help Africa will provide them with hives, training and business skills so that they can keep bees and sell honey. As with all Self Help Africa projects, everything is done on a pay it back or pay it forward basis: with the income they make from the honey, they will pay Self Help Africa back the cost of the hive, and they will train two other women in bee-keeping. In this way, they can break the cycle of poverty, and also of dependency.
