Rob Runs for Haiti
Organized by: Robert Bruce
EVENT DATE Sep 27, 2014
On September 27th, 2014, I (Rob) am going to run in the 519 Hearts for Haiti 5K to support Family Health Ministries (FHM) and their women's clinic near Fondwa, Haiti.
Check out my training blog for daily updates, more Haiti photos, stories, and pre-race updates!
Last year on a mission trip, I had the honor of visiting Family Health Ministries (FHM, based in Durham, NC) and their partners in Haiti and saw, first hand, the amazing work they are accomplishing. While I can't be there physically anymore to support their efforts, my heart still goes out to them and their work.
Alongside multiple other projects, such as constructing medical centers, job training, and schooling for Haitians of all ages, FHM is currently partnering with Building Goodness Foundation (BGF, based out of Charlottesville, Virginia) to build a women's health clinic, the Carmelle Voltaire Women's Health Center, in the rugged mountains of Haiti. As described by FHM:
"If a woman is giving birth in Fondwa, she is likely at home and often without medical care. If she or her child have complications, it is a rugged 1-hr commute to the nearest hospital, carried on a door-turned-stretcher in the back of a pick-up truck loaded with 20 other passengers...Our goal is to increase safe delivery of Haitian infants, to reduce maternal and child birth-related deaths, and to expand access to skilled birth attendants for the rural community."
Proceeds from the race are going toward building the clinic, and I am asking for your help for FHM and BGF to help make the clinic a reality. I'm asking for help to raise $1,500 for FHM and their wonderful work. If you can donate even a couple of dollars, I would most appreciate it.
As an added incentive, if the race can raise $10,000 overall, FHM will also be awarded a matching $10,000 challenge grant!
Please join me in supporting the work of FHM, and improve the health and well-being of the women of Haiti!
Note: If you are local to the race location (Durham, NC), you can also participate in the race as well! Registration will be open online, or sign up on race day!
