The city of Flint, Michigan, the birthplace of the middle class, has been experiencing not just a water crisis, but a water scandal, as local, state and federal governments have failed to adequately address the issue of lead contaminated water.

More than five years ago, the Karegnondi Water Authority (KWA) was tasked to fix and replace Flint’s aging water infrastructure. In order to cut costs while building new pipes, KWA switched Flint’s water source from Lake Huron to the Flint River. The high levels of salt and industrial waste in the Flint River caused the already-lead-leaching-pipes to corrode even further. This financial rationalization is the beginning of a story that tells us why Flint residents are drinking and bathing in water turned brown from rust, lead, and other contaminants.

Despite finally switching the water source back to Detroit, the damage has been done. Although public officials have assured Flint residents that the water is now safe, lead levels are still extremely high, which has caused residents to rely on bottled water to survive. This inability to address the issue has even become a federal problem. Both FEMA and the EPA have failed to manage the crisis and have failed to regulate their water.

After many years of necessary, but ultimately ineffective band aids, and a sheer lack of attention from public officials and agencies, it is time to bring forth long term solutions for the Flint community.

It is our goal to collectively utilize atmospheric water generation technology (AWG) to provide an alternative public water source for Flint residents. Please join us in our mission to provide clean water to all those in need.
