BENEFITING: Rebuilding Together NYC
ORGANIZER: Rebuilding Together NYC
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
Having finally decided to run my first NYC marathon (actually my first marathon in general), I felt that I also needed to support an organization that struck a personal chord with me. During Hurricane Sandy, my children were directly affected by the damage caused by the storm. The cost of repairs for us was extensive. However, we were the lucky ones. Having two able-bodied parents that were able to pay for the damage on the house was a privilege that my girls (and we) take for granted.
Unfortunately, others were not so fortunate. As just one example, as of this past October, 3 years after Sandy, almost 20% of the homes in Breezy Point that were destroyed by flood and fire have yet to be rebuilt. Thousands of homeowners are still unable to cover the cost of repairs. This is why I've decided to support Rebuilding Together NYC.
Rebuilding Together NYC (RT NYC) is a nonprofit organization that brings volunteers and communities together to improve the homes and lives of low-income New Yorkers. RT NYC provides free critical home repairs to low-income New Yorkers to supply them with safe and healthy housing with a particular focus on the elderly, disabled, families with children, veterans, and survivors of natural disasters. Since January 2013, much of that work has been Hurricane Sandy related. Since the storm, Rebuilding Together NYC has provided extensive repairs in over 70 homes impacted across Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and the Bronx, not to mention the other 150,000 American homeowners Rebuilding Together has helped over the last 25 years.

Thank you for helping me to support this RT NYC. I am honored to be able to run for an organization that has such a clear and immediate impact on our own communities.
