BENEFITING: Read Ahead
ORGANIZER: Read Ahead
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
On Sunday, November 6, 2016, I will be running in the 2016 TCS New York City Marathon in support of Read Ahead.
I participate in Read Ahead’s reading-based mentoring program through Nomura, my employer. Read Ahead inspires confidence in young readers through individualized mentoring with trusted adults. These relationships ignite the students' love for reading and build a strong foundation for their success in school and in life. They match corporate and community volunteers with struggling readers in nearby elementary schools and facilitate lunchtime mentoring sessions every week during the school year. The program is provided free of cost to over 1,000 students and over 20 public schools who benefit enormously from it.
Every Friday during the school year, I visit P.S. 51 to read with Yaser during his and my lunchtime. Yaser is in third grade, and like myself, a first generation American. We enjoy sharing our favorite home cooked foods with each other, and I enjoy teaching him Mandarin while he tries (rather unsuccessfully) to teach me Arabic. It has been a joy to read with Yaser and get to know him, and I look forward to seeing him every week.
Each mile I run while training and on race day is for a cause that is close to my heart. Read Ahead targets children at a critical stage in their lives. I believe education to be a great equalizer in our country. We should -and we can - take responsibility to ensure that children have the ability to read and ultimately wonder about the beautiful world around us.
Please consider helping Read Ahead inspire a love for reading and confidence in kids that need it the most. I hope you’ll consider supporting me in the coming months as I prepare for the race on November 6th....Thanks for your support! My goal is $2,500, but I hope to raise much, much more.
