THE STORY:
The Oglala Lakota Sioux Indian reservation in Pine Ridge, South Dakota is one of the poorest, areas in the entire United States where they have the second lowest life expectancy in the Western Hemisphere (second only to Haiti).
Unemployment is over 80% and it’s estimated that over half live below the poverty line. Diabetes is eight times & infant mortality is three times the U.S. rate. There is a massive housing crisis with multiple families often crammed into small mobile homes.
The reservation is large, spread out, rural and isolated and it's not easy to get around as mass transit is virtually non existent. There has been an outbreak of teen and pre-teen suicide on the reservation (over four times the U.S. rate of teen suicide) and the youth are lacking past times as basic as movie theaters, swimming pools, etc. In short, there isn't a lot to do on the reservation with things like music and arts programs virtually non existent on any of the reservation's seven schools.
Red Cloud School has been educating Lakota youth for over 125 years and they have outreach to the entire reservation. Their after school clubs and programs give Lakota youth positive outlets and things to do after school. We are raising funds to help fund the school's after school clubs.
