Jessica Dreamed of a Happy Ending: Here's Her Story
When I was 18, I thought I had met the man of my dreams. We would have a family and live happily ever after. In time, however, our relationship began to change—for the worse.
Once while in the car, we got into a disagreement over something so minor. He stopped the car, held me down, and clenched his hands tightly around my neck as my 11 month-old-daughter watched. Then, he forced us both out of the car and into the rain.
I will never forget coming home drenched from the rain, and looking in the bathroom mirror at the marks around my neck. I knew I couldn’t stay.
I moved into JBWS’ safe house. There, I learned so much about my right to be safe and became determined to live free from abuse. In the JBWS transitional living program, I received counseling and legal support to get a divorce. I have a full-time waitressing job, attend budgeting classes at JBWS, and am a full-time student at a county college working toward a nursing degree.
Thanks to the people that make this service possible, my happy ending is now. I’m moving forward free from domestic violence.
