A sister is a little bit of childhood that can never be lost, but in August 2013, my older sister Renee passed away from metastatic breast cancer that had spread quickly to her bones. She was forty years old, and only diagnosed a short four months earlier. My sister and I were very different from each other but we shared a special bond. Especially as a documentary photographer, I’ve found myself wishing I had at least one portrait of just the two of us together as adults that succeeded in capturing our different personalities, and the special connection that we shared. With this project, I would like to provide a lasting memory for breast cancer survivors and their sisters by creating beautiful portraits for them to treasure and pass down within their families. 'Sisters Project' is a photography portrait series where at least one sister is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer, or is a breast cancer survivor. With your help, the portraits, along with text, will be made across the United States, inclusive of different races, nationalities and socioeconomic demographics, and will form the basis for a book, Sisters & Survivors . My goal is to donate proceeds from the book to be used for metastatic breast cancer research and treatment (when it spreads outside of the breast to other parts of the body). All of the money raised here will be used to cover my expenses to make it possible for me to create the photographs, publish the subsequent book, and to be able to make the portrait sessions free for the women who want them. The funds also go toward creating a traveling exhibit of some of the photographs in breast cancer treatment centers. Some of the survivors I'm photographing have created businesses or non profits that help others with breast cancer, and I’d like to help inspire others to create something positive out of their experience. 'Sisters Project' is in part a healing process for myself, a tribute to my sister Renee, and to sisters everywhere facing breast cancer. Thank you so much for your support!
