For 99 years, Plumb Place has served women in Lyon County and surrounding areas. When others are unable or unwilling, Plumb Place steps up and fills a need for women who find themselves in homelessness and who often have nowhere else to turn. History Built in the 1870s, Plumb Place was originally the family home of Emporia founding father Preston Plumb. Mr. Plumb became a U.S. Senator and while he spent most of his time in Washington D.C., Mrs. Plumb kept the home and children while becoming active with issues pertaining to women. Senator Plumb died in the early 1890s while in office. Mrs. Plumb oversaw the massive remodel of the home; adding the pillars to the front of the home and also adding a third-floor ballroom. When Mrs. Plumb died in 1920, the Plumb heirs thought it would be appropriate to donate their family home to the YWCA to be used as a home for women. The family also donated $20,000 to move the carriage house forward and convert the space into sleeping rooms. Since Plumb Place opened its doors in 1921, it has remained a refuge for women. Services Today, Plumb Place serves as a home for women who find themselves in homelessness. Currently, 12 women reside in the home. Plumb Place also offers residents a Five-Point Holistic Program that focuses on: · Physical Wellness · Mental Wellness · Education Wellness · Employment/Occupational Wellness · Skills Wellness (finances, computer, college applications and job skills) The Five-Point Holistic Program helps build a brighter future for the women who reside at Plumb Place. Results Many women who have left Plumb Place have secured permanent housing, obtained full and part-time jobs, or have gone back to school to get their high school diploma or their higher-education degree. The Need Without Plumb Place, many women would remain in homelessness. As the only transitional housing program in Emporia solely for women, they would have nowhere else to turn in the Emporia area. Plumb Place is facing numerous funding challenges. For the past 40 years, Plumb Place has received HUD funds, and as of 2021, will not have HUD funds and will have $84,000 in gap funding. In addition, the historical home is in need of repairs, which will cost around $150,000. Plumb Place is not only in need of the gap funding, but funds to complete the necessary repairs, which have to be made according to code set forth by historical preservation requirements. Today, we are asking {company or individual name here} for {amount here} to preserve not only the home, but the critical services for the women who are currently residing at Plumb Place and the future women who will reside there.
