BENEFITING: Planned Parenthood Of New York City, Inc.
ORGANIZER: Planned Parenthood Of New York City, Inc.
Now more than ever, we need to support the Planned Parenthood organization.
US House Republicans are actively taking steps towards dramatically slashing federal funds for Planned Parenthood clinics: in fact, in May 4's healthcare bill, Planned Parenthood stands to lose almost 30 percent of its funding due to a provision in the bill that blocks the organization from getting Medicaid reimbursements for one year, unless its hundreds of clinics stop offering abortions.
Though of course women facing an unintended pregnancy must have access to safe, legal abortion services, we all know that Planned Parenthood provides so much more than just abortions.
I myself have visited three separate Planned Parenthood locations for standard female healthcare check-ups, when I was in-between doctors and when my provider didn’t have time to fit in an appointment. For others, Planned Parenthood clinics provide regular routine healthcare, prescriptions, and health education.
I cannot say this enough: all people deserve the equal opportunity to leave healthy, productive lives, and one key part of that equation is equal, affordable access to healthcare. All people deserve equal access to birth control, life-saving preventive care, and reproductive healthcare. All people deserve access to sex education programs that provide reliable and accurate information. Planned Parenthood provides all of this - so when politicians talk about “defunding Planned Parenthood,” what they’re really saying is “blocking patients who depend on public healthcare funds from getting this care at Planned Parenthood health centers.”
That’s why I’m doing what I can to fight for Planned Parenthood.
As President Obama said in his farewell speech this past January, “if something needs fixing, lace up your shoes and do some organizing.” I plan to lace up my shoes and run 26 miles. It would mean the world to me if you helped me do it for this vital cause.
