THE STORY:
This Sunday I’ll be running the NYC Marathon with the goal to fundraise for the Pittsfield Food Pantry. I grew up in Pittsfield, a town in Western Massachusetts. A once vibrant manufacturing base has departed resulting in high unemployment and tough times.
The Food Pantry provides a crucial community service. They have seen the need grow and grow. A year ago they were helping 90-100 families and this most recent week they served 141 families, often those with children. In addition, they deliver meals-on-wheels to 125 elderly shut-ins and often some basic medical services (flu shots and a blood pressure & diabetes clinic).
The food pantry and meals-on-wheels are administered by 25 volunteers, so 100% of your donation will be used to purchase food. They do their best to source left-overs from local bakeries and farms, but availability is seasonal and sporadic. Meat often needs to be purchased. For instance, providing turkeys for Thanksgiving will require over $1,000.
