THE STORY:

Human exploitation in the U.S.A. today? Unfortunately, yes; but if you want to help put an end to the gross injustice in American agriculture, check out our movement. We are the Student Farmworker Alliance and D.C. Fair Food. We are national network of students, young people, and community members organizing in solidarity with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers: a worker-based human rights organization internationally recognized for its achievements in the fields of social responsibility, who work to eliminate human trafficking, gender-based violence, and sweatshop conditions at work in the fields, and build a food system based on justice and dignity for farmworkers. Who are these farmworkers? They are the human beings who work in agricultural farms picking the produce that we consume everyday, and being paid in pennies. To change this, in 2011 the CIW launched the Fair Food Program (FFP): a groundbreaking model for Worker-driven Social Responsibility (WSR) based on a unique partnership among farmworkers, Florida tomato growers, and participating retail buyers, including Subway, Whole Foods, and Walmart. In 2015, the Program expanded into tomatoes in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Maryland, Virginia and New Jersey, as well as Florida strawberries and peppers. As of 2016, more than 30 companies have signed. Despite the fantastic success that the CIW has enjoyed, however, many companies have yet to engage in actively enforcing human rights and refuse to come to the table and join the Fair Food Program. Among these companies are Wendy's, the fast food chain, and Publix, the huge grocery store chain. In their dedication to getting Wendy's and Publix to sign, and pledge to end inhumane working conditions and exploitation in the agricultural fields for the farmworkers who supply their companies with fresh tomatoes, the CIW will be hosting a Worker's Voice Tour and traveling all over the East Coast and the Mid -West. Students and community members in D.C. and Philly would like to show our solidarity and attend their action in Columbus, OH, but we need your help! Please donate to our caravan north and check out the CIW and SFA's website to learn more about these amazing organizations: http://www.sfalliance.org/who-we-are/ http://www.ciw-online.org/about/ The more people present at these actions, the greater the pressure on these companies to do what's right. Help us get there and make a difference with our presence. Sincerely, The D.C. Student Farmworker Alliance and Fair Food group
