BENEFITING: TEAM PHENOMENAL HOPE INC
EVENT DATE: Jun 11, 2017
By climbing Mt Rainier, we will give ourselves a taste of PH. At 14,409ft, the low oxygen causes PH, which is a big component of altitude sickness. We will be short of breath tying our shoes, let alone climbing with 45 lbs on our backs, ice ax in hand, harnesses around our waists and walking in crampons.
In 2010 I climbed Mt Kilimanjaro with the sole intent of giving myself PH, so that I could experience what my patients feel. Kili is mostly rough hiking, although half who attempt don't make it to the top due to altitude sickness With grit and stubbornness, I somehow made it to the top. After that adventure, I swore I would never climb a mountain that required me to use a pickax....
So here we are in 2017, and I joined a team that will climb Mt Rainier, and I'll be using a ice ax. Mountaineering on Rainier is legit, riddled by glaciers and crevasses with significant risks of falling and avalanche. Nevertheless, I am training hard, and I will once again walk in the shoes of our patients (with crampons attached, of course).
