A Survivor's Story
When I met Evan he was attentive and caring. Standing at 6'6 and 280 pounds, he was my superman. After two years of dating we got married. I felt my life was perfect.
That all changed a year later when expecting our first child, Evan became distant, verbally abusive and cruel. He would apologize, blame it on stress and I’d accept and try to focus on our growing family. Three years later his behavior escalated to physical abuse. One night Evan started a fight with me. Enraged, he threw me on our bed and began choking me. I felt my life leaving my body …. My husband let go of the grip he had around my neck. Dazed, I slowly began to allow air back into my lungs. I no longer saw my superman; I saw a monster, standing at 6 feet 6inches tall weighing about 300 pounds. I don’t remember dialing but I heard the operator’s voice as I began to cry out for help. Soon thereafter I found Partners for Women and Justice (Partners).
Partners helped me secure a restraining order, child support and health coverage. Partners represented me as my ex-husband used the court system to bully and intimidate me with countless court filings and requests. Partners continues to assist me to this day.
My true superhero has been Partners for Women and Justice. Knowing that this organization exists to stand and fight for women, like me, that otherwise would not be able to do it on their own, gives me one less thing to worry about, one less battle to fight on my own.
