My name is Patti young and I am a mother of 3 beautiful children age 3,9 and 16. I am married to the love of my life and try to be as positive as I can. On July 13 2015 I was bit by a water moccasin Aka pit viper while stepping out onto my back porch. He was hiding in a crevasse and I didn't see him. He was 6ft long and as fat as a large coffee mug. From the research done this particular snake had the highest level of venom that their could be and I was told numerous times I was lucky to be alive. I immediately went to the hospital where I was given the maximum dose of antivenin. I was in ICU for 2 days and during my 13 day stay on the medical floor I had 3 surgeries which includes a partial amputation of my large toe. I was then released and was readmitted 30 days later for a full amputation of the big toe as the venom had not fully left my system and hollowed out my bone and frayed my tendon (at least that's what I was told in January they found I had osteomyelitis that the hospital had missed! In the meantime I applied for disability as per my Dr but was continually denied soooo 2 weeks ago went back to work even with all the ongoing pain and swelling. Since all of this began I found out I have a primary immune disease called IGG deficiency which means my body cannot heal properly or fight off infections like a normal person and I would need IGG replacement infusions which make you ill for 1-2 days following the infusion with work and 3 kids it seemed impossible. December 8th before work I had terrible pain and circulation in my foot and was told to go to ER immediately. There I was admitted and found through MRI that there is infection eating away at my foot. After getting put on pain meds and getting a surgical nerve block I was released. During my stay I was told work is DONE. I will never be able to work in my field (medical assistant) again as I am on my feet all day even sitting will be an issue due to ongoing swelling and neuropathy. My Dr wants me to start my disability claim over and said he will fight for me but this could take months. I ask that anyone willing and able could donate whatever they can the amount does not matter anything helps I also ask you pray for our family during the difficult times ahead.I have a Facebook page called beyond the bite where you can see pictures of my journey along with a photo of the actual snake that my awesome husband killed and brought to the hospital, this saved my life....
3/17 UPDATE: since I wrote this opening page I have had 1 more amputation and am going in for another one today. I had a partial foot amputation on January 24 for the osteomyelitis that was missed on my last surgery and today st Patrick's day I am having a below the knee amputation due to another infection and excruciating pain. I cannot do it anymore something has to be done. GOD BLESS and remember to visit FB beyond the bite.
4/7/15 due to the below the knee amputation I may be able to return to work in 1 yr however that is not a gurantee as per my dr there are many complications that may occur including ongoing pain, swelling and times I may need to be without my leg for days or weeks due to sores etc. but we are praying for the best!
