My name is Patty Watkins. I'm 61 and a wife, mom and 4 year-Stage 4 Lung Cancer metastasized to brain, SURVIVOR and WARRIOR! I was diagnosed at 57 and was in the best physical shape of my life. Working out at the YMCA 3X a week with my friends and walking @ 4miles daily. Out of the blue I had a blood clot in my leg which led me to ER and within a short time my whole body went haywire and surgery to biopsy my lung showed I had Stage 4 lung cancer. WHAT??!! I have the #1 killing cancer? At stage 4 the statistics told me that I have a 1-2% chance of living 5 years. Median rate was 8 months. I was at a point of my initial hospitalization given 2 days. My husband was told to get me into a hospice. I heard those words spoken by my pulmonologist. Little did he know I had a son graduating from Auburn in May of 2014 and that I would miraculously be there! I was! My strong faith in a merciful God and great doctors and nurses and a great chemo cocktail allowed me to attend his graduation! My GENETIC testing came back at the end of May that I had a very rare mutation called ROS1 that was driving my cancer cells to multiply. Only 1% of all lung cancer patients have ROS1 and there just so happened to be a clinical trial for that drug for Ros1 at Emory Winship Cancer Center. Within months my scans of lungs were stable. No growth of cancer due to Xalkori by Pfizer Drug. I want to raise awareness about lung cancer not being a smoker's disease and that anyone that has lungs can get it! I did have a grandmother & aunts with lung cancer. I also lived over Kentucky's Mammoth Cave system. Caves produce radon. Radon is the #2 leading cause of lung cancer. Kentucky has a 50% higher rate of lung cancer than the national average. 1 out of 16 Americans. #433 people a day die of lung cancer. More than 2 Mercedes Benz Stadiums full of people yearly! Did you realize that lung cancer kills 2 X more the women than breast cancer and is dismally underfunded. It's due to the stigma that goes along with lung cancer being cigarettes. The advertisements you see on TV showing cigarettes/smoke is misleading the public. 60% of the new patients being diagnosed are non smokers. If you have a pair of lungs YOU can get lung cancer. Lung cancer doesn't cause signs and symptoms in early stages. So please know some of the symptoms if the disease is advanced : persistent cough, chest pain, weight loss, wheezing, hoarseness, head ache, bone ache, coughing up blood, changes in a chronic cough or "smoker's" cough. If you are a smoker please consult your physician for recommended strategies for quitting and counseling. The CABRAL FRANKLIN FUND specifically targets funding for research for new treatments for lung cancer. Cabral was a non smoker. His fund was set up by his family to help others diagnosed with this horrific disease. Please consider giving and know that lung cancer survivors are literally DYING FOR YOUR ATTENTION. This can come to a stop with more funding of research. Thank you for your support! Patty Watkins-Advocate, Warrior-Victor!
