In October of 2018, Wes shared his passion for running and recovery with over 400 guests as the Mission Moment speaker at Pathway’s 7th annual charity event. His mom, Jane watched with tears of joy as he announced his two years of recovery; his new career; his new apartment and; his new life of being a daddy to his 6 year daughter. His speech was filmed by C. Thomas Lewis, a filmmaker at IUPUI, who is producing a documentary to raise awareness about the opioid epidemic. Watch his story at PathwaytoRecovery.org

Things couldn't have been better.... until November 9th, 2018. Wes received a call that changed his life forever. His mom, Jane, had been killed in a vehicle accident. At that moment, Wes’ life transformed from a sprint into an uphill battle through a quicksand of grief. His recovery was put to the ultimate test, as he trudged to make sense of it all. He thought about his dream... a dream he shared with his mom, his biggest fan. His dream was to run the Boston Marathon. Wes decided to pursue his dream in honor of his mom. Months later, as he crossed the finish line to qualify through a torrential downpour of rain and tears, he thought of his mom watching from the sidelines… the sidelines he never envisioned. And so his dream continues....

On November 9, 2019, the one year anniversary of Wes losing his mom, another dream came true. He met Sergeant Tyneka Sperry, the officer who saved his life after he overdosed September 11th, 2016, days before he came to Pathway. Unbeknownst to Sgt. Sperry, the surprise reunion had been in the works for months coordinated by Indy Police Chief Bryan Roach and Pathway Director Sandy Jeffers. After watching a brief video produced by filmmaker Lewis in which Wes expressed his desire to thank the officer who saved his life, the pair were reunited at Pathway's Gala in the presence of a standing ovation by 400 guests. There wasn't a dry eye in the house.
