Help Paint a Miracle win the Art Van Charity Challenge! We have a great need to purchase adaptive equipment to make our art studio accessible to all artists living with traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, and other special needs, and we need your help to do it!

Paint a Miracle is an art studio uniquely designed to offer people living with disabilities and other challenges an opportunity to explore the arts in an inspiring and innovative environment. Paint a Miracle's staff takes care to develop curriculum and adaptations to ensure that all artists have a fun and enriching fine arts experience. Artists work in a variety of mediums, including painting and drawing, ceramics and fiber arts. Their works are exhibited and sold throughout the community. Over the past few years, our artists have won a number of awards and exhibited their work throughout the state, including the prestigious ArtPrize competition. Paint a Miracle fosters community as well as creativity. It is a place of independence, artistic freedom and inspiration — a place where one can enjoy the creative process amongst friends.

In pursuit of our goal to create an atmosphere of ability and creativity, we employ adaptive modifications to help each individual artist reach his or her goals and have positive experiences. Although we already have a number of adaptive modifications in place to meet these various needs, we need $20,000 to complete additional improvements to make art truly accessible to artists of all ages and abilities. Our artists have a variety of sensory issues and other physical limitations, and it is our job to remove all barriers that might prevent someone from participating in a class. For example, our lighting must be accommodated to work for people with autism, brain injuries, low vision issues, and light sensitivities. Thus, we require a variety of different lighting scenarios that can be swapped out at a moment's notice. Our current fluorescent lighting must be converted to LED, with dimmer switches installed, and Ott lights purchased for the most sensitive artists.

We also have artists that require different set ups, including adaptive chairs, easels, and adjustable tables, as well as soundproofing. For example, one artist may require a chair that hugs due to sensory issues while another artist with a spinal cord injury may require a specially modified easel to paint with her mouthpiece. Head and neck pain may necessitate adjusting table height and specialized chairs with neck support. Another artist with sensory issues may need a quieter space. Thus, we are working to convert our conference room space to a studio which accomodates private lessons.

Ultimately, when our artists walk through the doors of Paint a Miracle, we want to be able to provide them with all the necessary tools and adaptations they need for their creativity to soar and to realize that they are capable of greatness.
