Does anyone know what Tough Mudder is?
You should, because it's super awesome and popular and probably the most celebrated obstacle marathon in North America. I've wanted to take part in it since I was a kid but I never got the opportunity to because it was ALWAYS held in a city NEAR my current hometown but NEVER ACTUALLY IN IT.
This year, I was like fuck it, I'm going to do it, so I signed up to run it in Whistler on Sunday the 18th of June.
That said, I wanted this to be more than just something I'm doing in my free time. I realized that you could fundraise for an organization of your choice, and apply to run the marathon in their name.
I was like, wow, there are so many cool organizations I could choose from, but why on earth would they ever pick me? I'm not an athlete, nor have I taken part in Tough Mudder before. However, literally who I am as a person is someone who lives off the motto that you might as well apply. What's the worst that can happen? Maybe they won't reply to you. Ok well then I wouldn't have to communicate with another person LOL, so I applied.
I chose to apply for it through the Organization for Autism Research (OAR) for a bunch of reasons that I probably shouldn't discuss on social media but am going to because it's me.
My cousins are autistic. Their biological mother walked out on them because they are autistic and she believes that said autism spectrum disorder was caused by VACCINATIONS and she doesn't want to throw her life away to taking care of "invalids."
It drives me nuts how we can come from pretty much the same background but I can live a life of such privilege when they CAN'T just because of a stupidass belief that has no foundation in science.
This drives me nuts for two reasons.
Number 1, AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER IS NOT CAUSED BY VACCINATIONS. Someone LIED that it did, and now, people are dying because people don't want to open their eyes.
Number 2, EVEN IF IT WAS, WHY WOULD PEOPLE RATHER HAVE THEIR KID POTENTIALLY DIE OF MEASLES OR SOMETHING ELSE TERRIBLE, THAN HAVE AN AUTISTIC CHILD?
There's NOTHING WRONG with people with autism spectrum disorder. In a way, this is how they're supposed to be. It drives me crazy how it, along with schizophrenia, is seen as almost the most stigmatized mental illness. My cousins are awesome, and I have a great time every time I see them, and it makes me so angry that people don't see them as people just because they have a bit of a condition - that people can't see them for who they are and how I see them.
I wanted to give back to the entire community of people with autism spectrum disorder, and those who work so hard to take down the stigma and actually work towards making life better for those with autism spectrum disorder. We live in a world now where I can't do much with my Bachelor's degree in Biochem and Psych except go to grad school, but I can at least raise $1000 for those who CAN do something about it directly.
That said, PLEASE DONATE TO THE CAUSE. Even $1 is appreciated. :)
Thanks for caring. :)
