BENEFITING: OPERATION DIGNITY INC
ORGANIZER: OPERATION DIGNITY INC
Operation Dignity was founded in 1993 by Alex McElree, a three-tour Vietnam War veteran. After leaving the military, Alex struggled with addiction and homelessness for many years, fearing that he had survived war only to die on the streets of Oakland. When Alex finally got back on his feet, he collected a few beds and started a shelter in a small Oakland house. Operation Dignity was born. In the 24 years since, Operation Dignity has grown to own three properties that provide shelter and housing to 100 veterans and their families on a given night (approximately 250 each year). We were the first U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs homeless program funded in Oakland, and are still one of the largest providers of transitional housing for veterans in the region. We are raising money to sustain and expand our programs that help veterans and their families out of homelessness. Your donation today will help homeless veterans access housing, peer support, nutritious food, intensive one-on-one case management, addiction recovery support, employment and benefits access support, and children's and family services. Last year, more than 80% of the veterans in our transitional housing exited to permanent housing, ending their homelessness and showing the long-term impact of our programs on veterans' lives.
