Encore Spotlight: Reinvesting in the OBP
ABOUT OLD BRICK PLAYHOUSE
Located in historic downtown Elkins, West Virginia, The Old Brick Playhouse (OBP) is a non-profit educational theatre arts organization created in 1992.
Our touring company has performed in the U.S. mid-Atlantic region and abroad to a cumulative audience of over 1.5 million students. Our after-school and summer programs are designed to provide educational arts opportunities for children and youth ages 5 to 18. Additionally, we offer family and group entertainment through a variety of performances and partnerships.
To provide a safe environment that offers educational experiences in the arts to children and youth ages 5 to 18.
OUR PROGRAMS & COMMUNITY
The Old Brick Playhouse tours original musical comedies for children to elementary schools, hospitals, and theatres. These plays expose students to the performing arts and provide resources and tools for them to use when confronting various social issues. Since 2004, OBP has also presented a theatre-centered literacy enhancement program for students.
Through our Apprentice Program and Summer Camps, we provides a safe, structured, after-school opportunity for students, age 5-18, to engage in theatre from a beginner to advance level. Our alumni roster boasts of over 2,500 students, 100 of whom are either studying or working professionally in theatre.
The Old Brick Playhouse hosts local actors, directors, and producers through the Elkins Area Community Theatre (EACT) which showcases local volunteers in plays, excursion train experiences, and special performances for the entertainment and arts enrichment of our community. Our partnerships include The Polar Express, Murder Mystery, and other train excursions offered via Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad as well as other special events.
The Old Brick Playhouse is dedicated to the theatre arts and education programs. We offer a wide range of educational arts programs that aim to:
- Provide educational theatre experiences and literacy training
- Increase a student's self-esteem
- Provide educational programming on character development
- Enjoy the history of Vaudeville of Randolph County
