BENEFITING: WE Charity Canada
Oak Park High School students have now travelled to the Massi Mara of Kenya on three seperate occasions, each time immersing themselves in the rich culture of the Massi and Kipsigi people. Our service learning trips have involved building schools and bridging the gap between the lives of students from a developed and developing nation. As we begin planning our return in 2019 we are embarking a most exciting venture- the goal being to send a deserving young woman to a Kisaruni School for Girls on a four year, $10,000 scholarship.
A Message from Oak Park's Kenyan Scholarship of Dreams
I am a proud teacher at Oak Park High School in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I was lucky enough to visit Kenya to meet and work with some of the students and educators there including one of the Kisaruni High School for Girls. These girls are the future and hope for Kenya. These girls were inspirational. The girls described the school as having no students and no teachers...all learners. They help each other learn and all give of their gifts and realize that they have a responsibilty in each others' education. They all value education and all have inspirations to go on to further education as doctors, nurses, teachers, journalists, engineers, pilots and more. I spoke with one girl who explained that it is her privilege to make a better life for her family and community who she would help support. I never once heard them say they wanted to get rich or leave their community...they want to stay and make it better. I was so inspired and proud of them.
As a teacher at Oak Park I have been blessed with the opportunity to witness real and impactful change in the lives of young adults who have had the good fortune to travel to the Masai Mara in Kenya. And the impact goes both ways. Having first ventured into the Masai and Kipsigis region in 2013 I witnessed a two room medical clinic add a neo-natal clinic and then blossom into a full scale, in-patient hospital with two modern operating rooms in four short years. Adding school rooms to allow the children of Kenya to have access to education is a game changer for the future of their country. And what we bring back to Canada are enlightened and spiritually changed students who see that even under subsistent living conditions, people can be happy if given the things that we sometimes take for granted, like education. We want to continue to be a part of that change by raising $10,000 to send a young lady to attend a Kisaruni School for Girls. Help us make a dream come true and change a life and a community in a developing country. Please help Oak Park raise $10,000 to make one girl's dream come true with a four year high school scholarship.
