Exertional Heat Stroke. Many people have never heard of it, or if they have, believe it rarely happens. EHS happens when a person is working too hard in the heat and their body loses the ability to cool down. This allows the temperature in their abdomen to become too hot and their organs malfunction and begin to shut down. Now they are fighting for their life. EHS is estimated to have thousands of occurrences that are not fatal each year, but it is still the third leading cause of death in high school athletes. However, of the top three, it is the ONLY one that is both preventable and 100% survivable. Education is the key to both. EHS Education for Kids is age-appropriate learning that teaches elementary and middle school students how to avoid EHS through proper nutrition, hydration, and rest before, during, and after outdoor sports and activities, as well as self-monitoring for dehydration. They will also learn the early signs and symptoms of EHS and the most effective first aid. Early education is important for life skills and kids want to understand how to take care of themselves and ways they can help others. EHS Education for Kids is an interactive and fun way to learn healthy habits for working and playing safely, even when the weather is hot.
