Reaching the goal of this fundraiser will create an ongoing scholarship for deserving students at Kingsborough Community College. I am an immigrant who came from Hong Kong many moons ago. My grandparents left China to give us all a better opportunity for life. We didn't have much growing up but some of my fondest memories were walking to Chinatown (we didn't have a car) hand in hand with my grandpa and how he'd let me buy whatever I wanted or cook my favorite dish for dinner. My grandpa passed shortly after I got married in 1998 and after my grandma passed on Thanksgiving day in 2012, it dawned on me how courageous they were to have lived in a rough neighborhood where they walked to Chinatown in every kind of weather, worked in a sweatshop in some of the most unsafe conditions, and often mugged for what few dollars they had in their pockets as they sacrificed for their families while always making time for their grandchildren.
I felt that one of the best ways to honor their sacrifices was to create a scholarship that would help some of the most hardworking students at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn, NY. Many of these students work multiple jobs while completing their studies to help support their families and the annual funds from this memorial scholarship can mean a big difference to these students. In many cases, it can mean the difference between continuing their education and dropping out of college. I hope you will help me in this endeavor with as much or as little as you can spare. Unity is strength... when there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved.
Working at Kingsborough Community College, I see a lot of students who are immigrants and it dawned on me that we could create an endowment fund to honor my grandparents and help support deserving students who are diligently working hard to create a better life for themselves and their families. Endowed scholarships are created with a minimum donation of $10,000 but once that initial amount is reached, this endowment will be able to support students year after year. If we can raise the initial amount, this endowment fund will outlive all of us because the scholarship will come from the proceeds from investing the initial $10,000. Even if we don't reach the minimum goal, all the money will still go towards helping immigrant students at Kingsborough (it just won't be every year but until the funds are given away) but I know we can raise the minimum goal!
Here is a link to just a few of the Kingsborough students who are being helped through Kingsborough's fundraising efforts. You can see that something as simple as a monthly Metrocard can help a student continue their studies and not drop out or $20 for a new pair of glasses can also mean the difference between continuing towards their degree or dropping out. These students are very hardworking but many are in dire need of financial support. This is where we can all help. Anything you can afford will greatly help these students.
You can donate by clicking on the "Donate to this fundraiser" button but you can also write out your check to The Kingsborough Community College Foundation and please add "The Yuet Chun & Tai Yee Ma Scholarship" on the memo portion of your check to make sure that Dr. Elizabeth Basile will know that your donation will be added towards this scholarship. Thank you so much for making this dream into a reality!
Thank you so much!
